Spitsbergen Postcard, 1900
The Spitsbergen postcard dated 1900 in itself is quite an item.
The green 5 øre Spitsbergen local post
makes it all the more special. However, the red Kahrs 10 øre postage
meter imprint is the only known postally used example.
One example is known as a proof in Norway postal archives. This
card was only available during the 1900 Hapag Line polar voyage. |

To the right is a photographically cropped enlargement of the
Spitsbergen local post stamp with the Kahrs postage meter imprint.
It is thought that the postcard was posted at Spitsbergen on a Hapag
Line polar voyage of 1900. The Kahrs imprint was probably added
when the card was presented by the cruise line to the post offices in
Christiania, Norway. |
